Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki on the Tokaido by Katsushika Hokusai, dating to around 1833–34, is a Japanese color woodblock print from the series Unusual Views of Famous Bridges in Various Provinces. The sweeping wooden bridge dominates the composition, carrying a procession of travelers high above the riverbed while small figures, winding waterways, distant hills, and Mount Fuji complete the expansive landscape.
This version is based on the public-domain impression held by the Art Institute of Chicago from the Bruce Goff Archive. Its aged, understated palette gives the scene a softer appearance, with muted blue-green and gray tones through the riverbed and landscape, warm tan and ochre coloring, and subdued reddish-brown tones along the bridge and its tall wooden supports. Against the lightly toned sky, the darker trees, distant landscape, and delicate blue waterways create a restrained contrast that emphasizes the graceful arch of the bridge and Hokusai’s dramatic use of perspective.
