The Unicorn in Captivity
The Unicorn in Captivity is perhaps the most recognizable image from the seven-piece series known as The Unicorn Tapestries, also called The Hunt of the Unicorn. Dating to 1495–1505, the tapestry depicts the unicorn resting peacefully within a low circular enclosure beneath a pomegranate tree, loosely tethered to it by a golden chain. Against the dark background, an abundance of individually depicted flowers and plants creates the richly decorative millefleurs effect for which this particular tapestry is especially known.
Currently titled The Unicorn Rests in a Garden by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the scene remains intriguingly ambiguous: the unicorn appears capable of escaping its enclosure yet remains peacefully within it. Its mysterious imagery and iconic central figure have helped make it one of the most enduring representations of the medieval unicorn.
