THE UNICORN IN CAPTIVITY

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Unicorn in Captivity, the famous late-medieval unicorn image now titled The Unicorn Rests in a Garden by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dating to 1495–1505, it is one of the seven surviving works traditionally grouped as The Unicorn Tapestries, also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn.

At the center of the scene, the unicorn rests beneath a pomegranate tree inside a low circular enclosure, attached to the tree by a golden chain. The fence is low and the chain appears loose enough for the unicorn to escape, which has contributed to centuries of interpretation surrounding the image. The pomegranates have been associated with fertility and marriage, while other readings have connected the unicorn with Christian symbolism. Around the central figure, individual flowers and plants create the dense millefleurs setting for which the tapestry is especially recognizable.

The original tapestry was woven in wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. This Comfort Guild version translates the historic artwork into a woven cotton blanket with colorful fringed edges.
