The Millinery Shop (1879–1886) by Edgar Degas offers an intimate glimpse into the fashionable world of a nineteenth-century Parisian hat shop. Viewed from an unusual elevated angle, the composition is dominated by an array of elaborate hats in soft greens, blues, creams, yellows, and warm floral tones, while a solitary young woman sits absorbed in the hat she holds before her.
Degas deliberately leaves the woman’s role uncertain. Her gloved hands and pursed lips—possibly holding a pin—suggest a milliner carefully working on a hat, yet her fashionable fur-trimmed clothing also allows her to be read as a customer examining a potential purchase. This ambiguity developed as Degas reworked the painting and remains an important part of the finished composition.
The dramatically cropped scene, tilted perspective, and asymmetrical arrangement give the painting the feeling of a fleeting view into everyday Parisian life. Broad, unfinished-looking passages surrounding some of the hats contrast with more carefully rendered details, connecting the milliner’s creative process with Degas’s own process of constructing and revising the painting.
