The Great Wave off Kanagawa is an iconic Japanese woodblock print created by Katsushika Hokusai around 1830–32 as part of his celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series. The dramatic composition shows a towering wave curling above three boats as their crews navigate the turbulent sea, while the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji appears small and distant beneath the wave. Created during Japan’s Edo period, the print is a renowned example of ukiyo-e art and is notable for Hokusai’s striking use of perspective and rich blue tones, including the then newly available Prussian blue pigment. The contrast between the immense, energetic wave and the still, distant form of Mount Fuji helped make The Great Wave one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art.
