Roses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in May 1890, was created during his final weeks at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. Part of a small series of floral still lifes from this period, the painting captures an abundant bouquet of roses against a fresh green background with Van Gogh's distinctive, expressive brushwork. Though the flowers appear largely white today, Van Gogh originally painted the roses pink, creating a complementary contrast with the surrounding greens. Over time, the light-sensitive red pigments faded, transforming the appearance of the painting. Created during a period when Van Gogh was working intensely and preparing to leave Saint-Rémy, Roses reflects his enduring fascination with flowers, color, and the vitality of the natural world.
