Lilies by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai dates to the early 1830s and belongs to an untitled group of woodblock prints commonly known as the Large Flowers series. Created during Japan’s Edo period, the composition presents lilies at several stages of bloom, from tightly formed buds to fully opened flowers, set against a simple background that keeps attention on their sweeping stems, leaves, and petals. Hokusai combined expressive, brush-like outlines with carefully layered color and subtle gradations of pink, green, and black to give the flowers both delicacy and movement. The work reflects his distinctive approach to Japanese floral and botanical imagery, transforming a close study of lilies into a striking ukiyo-e composition.
