Details

This 100% woven cotton blanket features Alphonse Mucha's JOB cigarette paper advertising poster, one of the artist's best-known Art Nouveau commercial designs from the late 19th century. Often cataloged as 1896 or 1897, the color lithograph was created for JOB, a trademark of the Joseph Bardou Company, during Mucha's influential period of poster work in Paris.

A glamorous woman holds a lit cigarette as her head tilts back and her abundant hair fills the composition in sweeping curves. Smoke rises through the image in an arabesque that mingles with her hair and the JOB lettering, while repeating monograms form part of the patterned background. Around the figure, an ornate border influenced by Byzantine mosaic decoration gives the commercial poster an unusually elaborate presence.

The design is a strong example of the visual language that made Mucha's advertising work so recognizable: flowing linework, decorative typography, stylized ornament and a central female figure treated as part of the overall pattern rather than simply placed inside it. The Mucha Foundation considers the JOB poster one of his best-known advertising designs, and its distinctive treatment of the figure helped establish the image now closely associated with the "Mucha woman."

Rendered as a woven textile, the poster's warm, muted palette and intricate linework take on a textured, tapestry-like character. The blanket is woven from 100% cotton and finished with colorful fringed edges, creating a substantial art blanket that works as both a functional textile and a decorative piece for anyone drawn to Mucha, Art Nouveau, or historic poster design.
