Rather than a traditional portrait, the painting is a tronie—a study of an imagined character or type—depicting a young woman turning toward the viewer in an exotic blue and yellow headscarf with a luminous, oversized pearl earring.
Vermeer’s celebrated treatment of light gives the figure her remarkable presence, from the soft illumination across her face to the highlights on her eyes, lips, and famous earring. The vivid blue of the headscarf was created using costly natural ultramarine derived from lapis lazuli, while modern research has revealed that the background, now appearing nearly black, originally depicted a dark green curtain. The identity of the young woman remains unknown, adding to the enduring mystery of one of the most recognizable works of Dutch Golden Age art.
