This 100% woven cotton blanket features Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, the c. 1665 Dutch Golden Age painting known for its luminous figure, blue-and-yellow headscarf, and striking pearl earring.

Rather than a conventional portrait, Girl with a Pearl Earring is a tronie, a type of seventeenth-century Dutch painting centered on an imagined character or type. The young woman turns toward the viewer while Vermeer uses soft transitions of light across her face and small highlights on her eyes, lips, and earring. The vivid blue of her headscarf was painted with natural ultramarine made from lapis lazuli, an exceptionally costly pigment in Vermeer’s time. Modern research has also revealed that the nearly black background originally included a dark green curtain whose appearance changed over the centuries.

The identity of the young woman remains unknown, leaving a little mystery behind one of Vermeer’s most recognizable works.
