Almond Blossom was painted by Vincent van Gogh in February 1890 while he was living in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. Van Gogh created the painting as a gift to celebrate the birth of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo's son, Vincent Willem van Gogh, who was named after him. Set against a brilliant blue sky, flowering almond branches stretch across the composition, celebrating one of Van Gogh's favorite subjects. Because almond trees are among the earliest to bloom in spring, the blossoms represented new life and the arrival of spring, making the subject especially fitting for the birth of his nephew. The painting also reflects Van Gogh's fascination with Japanese woodblock prints, which influenced the strong outlines, unusual cropping, and placement of the branches across the picture plane.
