A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is Georges Seurat’s celebrated depiction of Parisians enjoying a leisurely day along the Seine. Created between 1884 and 1886, the monumental painting captures figures strolling, sitting beneath trees, and gathering along the riverbank of La Grande Jatte, an island just west of Paris. One of the defining works of Neo-Impressionism, the painting showcases Seurat’s innovative approach to color, in which carefully placed touches and dots of contrasting hues visually blend when viewed from a distance. The technique became closely associated with Pointillism and gives the scene its distinctive sense of light, color, and structured stillness. Combining a scene of modern Parisian leisure with Seurat’s highly methodical approach to composition and color, La Grande Jatte became his best-known work and remains one of the most recognizable paintings of late 19th-century French art.
