Details

This 100% cotton woven blanket features Plate 159, “Rosemary. Rosmarinus,” from Elizabeth Blackwell’s 18th-century botanical work A Curious Herbal. The illustration presents the rosemary plant in full, with its slender leaves and delicate blossoms accompanied by separate studies of the flower, calyx, and seed.

Published in London between 1737 and 1739, A Curious Herbal brought together 500 botanical illustrations created as a practical reference to plants used in medicine. Blackwell studied living specimens, including plants at the Chelsea Physic Garden, and took an unusually hands-on role in the work by drawing, engraving, and coloring its botanical plates herself.

The herbal also has a remarkable story behind it. Blackwell undertook the project while her husband was imprisoned for debt, using her skill as an illustrator to support her family. The resulting volumes went on to serve physicians and apothecaries while becoming an important work of 18th-century botanical illustration.

Rosemary appears as Plate 159 in Volume I. Blackwell places the branching plant at the center of the composition while isolating several botanical details beside it, bringing scientific observation and careful illustration together on a single plate. Reproduced as a woven textile, the design retains the distinctive character of an early botanical study and works naturally with botanical, garden-inspired, traditional, and natural history decor.

Woven from 100% cotton and finished with colorful fringed edges, the blanket has a soft, breathable feel with the visible texture of woven threads. Four sizes are available for different spaces and uses.
