This 100% cotton woven blanket features Elizabeth Blackwell’s Lavendula (Lavender), Plate 294 from Volume 2 of A Curious Herbal, her landmark 18th-century collection of botanical illustrations.

Plate 294 depicts lavender in the precise, observational style that gives Blackwell’s work its distinctive character. A slender plant rises through the composition with narrow green leaves and delicate flowering stems, accompanied by smaller studies of the flower, cup, and seeds. The softly colored engraving sits against a warm, aged-paper ground, giving the design the quiet character of an antique botanical print.

A Curious Herbal was published in London between 1737 and 1739 and brought together 500 illustrations of plants used in the practice of medicine at the time. Blackwell drew her botanical subjects from life, creating a work that remains notable for both its botanical detail and its place in the history of botanical illustration.
