This botanical illustration of Faetid Camomile (Cotula faetida), also identified historically as May-Weed, comes from Plate 67 of Volume 1 of Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal, first published in London in 1737. Created from drawings taken from life, Blackwell’s celebrated herbal documented hundreds of plants valued in eighteenth-century medicine and botany.
The artwork depicts a tall, branching camomile specimen with delicate, finely divided foliage and clusters of daisy-like flowers. Pale white petals surround yellow-green centers, while rounded buds and blossoms in different stages of growth spread naturally across the slender stems. Small botanical details accompany the main plant, reflecting the careful observational approach of Blackwell’s original botanical plates.
With its airy composition, muted greens, soft whites, warm yellow accents, and distinctive hand-colored character, the illustration brings the look of an 18th-century botanical print and antique herbal artwork to the woven design.
