Faetid Camomile Woven Blanket – Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal
Details
This 100% cotton woven blanket features Elizabeth Blackwell’s Faetid Camomile botanical illustration from A Curious Herbal. The design comes from Plate 67 of Volume 1, titled Cotula faetida (May-Weed or Faetid Camomile), bringing a very specific piece of eighteenth-century botanical history to a woven textile.
First published in London between 1737 and 1739, Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal brought together 500 botanical illustrations drawn from plants studied from life. This plate depicts a tall, branching may-weed specimen with finely divided green foliage, white daisy-like flowers, yellow-green centers, and smaller botanical studies arranged around the main plant.
Muted greens, soft whites, and warm yellow accents give the artwork the character of an antique herbal illustration. Woven into cotton rather than treated simply as surface decoration, the design takes on the visible texture and detail of the textile itself.
A botanical blanket for people who like their florals with a little history attached.
