This botanical illustration of Camomile is Plate 298 from Volume II of Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal, published in 1739. Blackwell depicted the plant from life, capturing its finely divided foliage, slender stems, exposed roots, buds, and distinctive daisy-like flower heads in the detailed style of 18th-century botanical illustration.
Originally created as part of Blackwell’s celebrated collection of 500 plants used in medicine, the plate combines careful botanical observation with the delicate character of an antique hand-colored engraving. The aged paper tones, fine linework, and naturalistic presentation give the artwork an unmistakable historic botanical aesthetic, bringing a piece of 18th-century natural history to the woven design.
