Zodiaque (“La Plume”) by Alphonse Mucha, dating to 1896–1897, is a celebrated Art Nouveau color lithograph built around an elegant woman shown in profile. Her flowing hair, elaborate jewelry, ornate headdress, and richly patterned surroundings are framed by a halo-like circular disk containing the twelve signs of the zodiac. Intricate botanical forms, graceful curves, and decorative details give the composition the lavish ornamental character associated with Mucha’s distinctive Art Nouveau style.
Originally designed in 1896 as a calendar for the Parisian printer F. Champenois, Zodiaque was soon adopted by Léon Deschamps of the arts journal La Plume for its 1897 calendar. The design became one of Mucha’s most popular works and appeared in several variations. This version is based on the 1896–1897 color lithograph in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
