Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki on the Tōkaidō by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1827–30 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is an Edo-period Japanese woodblock print from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces. The enormous curved bridge stretches across the composition on tall wooden supports, its scale emphasized by the procession of tiny travelers crossing above the broad, nearly dry Yahagi River.
This version is based on the public-domain impression held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rogers Fund, 1922. Its palette is distinguished by a pale blue sky, blue-green trees and distant landscape, warm tan and yellow tones across the bridge, and winding blue waterways cutting through the muted gray-brown riverbed. Small umbrellas and figures add touches of warmer color below the bridge, while Mount Fuji rises subtly in the distance. The combination of cool blues and greens with the warm bridge creates a balanced, softly colored interpretation of Hokusai’s dramatic landscape.
