Wheat Field with Cypresses by Vincent van Gogh captures the sun-filled landscape surrounding Saint-Rémy in southern France, where the artist lived and worked in 1889. The composition features a golden wheat field framed by towering cypress trees, olive vegetation, the distant blue Alpilles mountains, and a dramatic sky brought to life through Van Gogh’s rhythmic, swirling brushwork. Van Gogh first painted this composition in June 1889 and returned to it later that year, creating additional versions of the scene. The version now held by the National Gallery in London was completed in September 1889, while the earlier June painting is part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. Van Gogh held the composition in particularly high regard, describing it among his best summer landscapes.
