Two Sisters (On the Terrace) was painted in 1881 by French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Set in Chatou along the Seine outside Paris, the painting depicts two young ladies surrounded by the lush scenery and leisurely atmosphere that frequently inspired Renoir during this period. Despite the painting's familiar English title, the figures were not actually sisters.
Renoir contrasts the carefully modeled figures with a loosely painted Impressionist landscape of foliage, water, and distant boats. The older woman, dressed in blue with a vivid red hat, sits prominently in the foreground beside a basket filled with colorful balls of wool, while the younger girl appears close beside her. Rich reds, blues, greens, and touches of floral color give the scene the luminous quality associated with Renoir's work and capture the pleasures of everyday life along the Seine in late 19th-century France.
