This 100% cotton woven blanket features Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Two Sisters (On the Terrace), painted in 1881 at Chatou along the Seine. The French Impressionist scene places a young woman in a deep blue dress and vivid red hat beside a child, surrounded by spring foliage, water, distant boats, and luminous color. Rich reds, blues, greens, and touches of floral color give the scene the luminous quality associated with Renoir's work and capture the pleasures of everyday life along the Seine in late 19th-century France. 

The painting was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882 under the title Les deux soeurs (“The Two Sisters”), although the figures were not actually sisters. The seated young woman was eighteen-year-old Eugénie Marie Darlaud, known as Jeanne Darlaud, an aspiring actress. Renoir set the more solidly modeled figures against a looser landscape of foliage, flowers, water, and boats, creating a striking contrast between the figures and the atmosphere of Chatou. The original painting is now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
