THE UNICORN PURIFIES WATER

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Unicorn Purifies Water, a late-medieval scene from The Unicorn Tapestries, also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn. Dating to 1495–1505, the tapestry is also associated with the title The Unicorn Is Found and depicts the moment when the hunters finally encounter their elusive quarry.

The unicorn kneels beside a fountain and lowers its horn into the flowing water while hunters and hounds gather around it. According to medieval legend, a unicorn's horn could detect or neutralize poison, and details within the tapestry reinforce that idea. Plants historically associated with antidotes appear near the water, while birds, rabbits, deer, a lion, and other animals fill the landscape around the central scene.

The result is more than a hunting image. It brings together medieval natural history, folklore, symbolism, and the extraordinary botanical detail found throughout the Unicorn Tapestries.

The original was woven using wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. This Comfort Guild version presents the historic composition as a woven cotton blanket finished with colorful fringe.

We love these tapestries here at Comfort Guild and wanted to make sure we have designs featuring the artwork from all seven of these Unicorn Tapestries, connecting this scene with the other surviving works traditionally associated with the legendary hunt.

Created for people drawn to medieval art, historic textiles, unicorn imagery, and artwork with several centuries of mystery still attached.
