THE UNICORN DEFENDS HIMSELF

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Unicorn Defends Himself, one of the dramatic late-medieval works traditionally grouped as The Unicorn Tapestries, also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn. Created around 1495–1505, the scene captures the hunt at its most chaotic as the surrounded unicorn fights against hunters and their hounds.

The injured unicorn stands at the center of the struggle, confronting the animals and armed hunters closing in around him. Lances converge from several directions while the unicorn attacks a hound and kicks toward a hunter approaching from behind. The action is unusually vivid, but the tapestry is equally remarkable for its smaller details. Clothing, vegetation, animals, weapons, and different textile textures were rendered with extraordinary precision by the original weavers.

That contrast between violent movement and meticulous craftsmanship makes this one of the most visually intense works in the group.

The historic tapestry was woven from wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. On this Comfort Guild blanket, the medieval artwork is reproduced through a 100% cotton woven construction with colorful fringed edges.
