THE UNICORN CROSSES A STREAM

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Unicorn Crosses a Stream, a late-medieval scene from The Unicorn Tapestries, traditionally known as The Hunt of the Unicorn. Dating to 1495–1505, the tapestry depicts the unicorn attempting to escape as the hunt closes in around him.

Already wounded, the unicorn leaps across a stream while hunters pursue with lances, hounds, and hunting horns. The overlapping figures and converging weapons give the scene an unusual sense of speed and disorder. In contrast, the landscape is rendered with the dense vegetation, animals, water, and distant architecture characteristic of the series.

The hunt itself draws on the visual language of medieval aristocratic stag hunting, but replacing the ordinary quarry with the legendary unicorn turns the scene into something far more ambiguous. Throughout the tapestries, courtly hunting, medieval folklore, natural imagery, and religious or romantic symbolism overlap without settling into one simple interpretation.

The original tapestry was woven with wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. This Comfort Guild version reproduces the scene as a woven cotton blanket with colorful fringed edges.
