THE MYSTIC CAPTURE OF THE UNICORN

This 100% woven cotton blanket features a digitally reconstructed presentation of The Mystic Capture of the Unicorn, the fragmentary late-medieval work also associated with the title The Unicorn Surrenders to a Maiden. Dating to 1495–1505, the surviving fragments are traditionally grouped with The Unicorn Tapestries, also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn.

Unlike the six largely complete hangings associated with the group, this work survives only in fragments. The remaining imagery shows the unicorn subdued beside a maiden in an enclosed garden while a hunter waits nearby. Much of the original composition was lost following damage to the tapestries, including during the upheaval surrounding the French Revolution.

Because the historical work is incomplete, this Comfort Guild design is different from the other six blankets we have from this series. The missing areas have been digitally reconstructed to create a more complete presentation, while retaining the recognizable unicorn, figures, botanical imagery, colors, and medieval character of the surviving fragments.

The original fragments were woven with wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. The reconstructed artwork is reproduced here as a 100% woven cotton blanket finished with colorful fringe.
