THE HUNTERS RETURN TO THE CASTLE

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Hunters Return to the Castle, a late-medieval work from The Unicorn Tapestries, traditionally known as The Hunt of the Unicorn. Dating to 1495–1505, the tapestry brings together two moments from the conclusion of the hunt within a single elaborate composition.

On the left, hunters deliver the final blows to the unicorn. On the right, its body is carried on horseback to a castle, where richly dressed figures and attendants wait to receive the returning party. Architecture, clothing, vegetation, horses, hunting equipment, and smaller figures crowd the image with the kind of detail that rewards a closer look.

As with the rest of the Unicorn Tapestries, the imagery has inspired multiple interpretations. Details including a holly tree and the thorny branches around the unicorn have been discussed in connection with Christian symbolism, although the precise meaning of the tapestries remains a subject of debate.

The original was woven from wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. This Comfort Guild version brings the historic scene to a 100% woven cotton blanket finished with colorful fringe.
