THE HUNTERS ENTER THE WOODS

This 100% woven cotton blanket features The Hunters Enter the Woods, the scene that introduces the hunt depicted across the works traditionally grouped as The Unicorn Tapestries, also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn. Dating to 1495–1505, the tapestry shows hunters and their hounds moving through a densely planted woodland in search of the legendary animal.

Rather than placing the unicorn at the center, this scene lets the landscape do much of the work. Flowering plants, trees, animals, and richly dressed hunters fill a dark millefleurs field, building a sense of anticipation before the quarry appears. The botanical detail found throughout the Unicorn Tapestries is remarkable: more than one hundred plant species are represented across the group, most of which have been identified.

Another recurring detail is the intertwined “A” and “E” cipher woven into the tapestries. Its meaning and the identity of the original owners remain uncertain, one of several unanswered questions surrounding the works.

The original tapestry combined wool, silk, silver, and gilt threads. This Comfort Guild version reproduces its intricate medieval imagery on a woven cotton blanket with colorful fringed edges.
