This 100% cotton woven blanket features Peonies and Butterfly by Katsushika Hokusai, an early-1830s Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print filled with flowering peonies, broad leaves, and a butterfly caught in the movement of the scene.

Created during Japan's Edo period, Peonies and Butterfly belongs to a group of ten large-format flower-and-bird prints from the early Tenpō era. Rather than arranging the flowers as a completely still botanical study, Hokusai gives the composition a sense of motion. The peony blossoms and leaves bend toward one side while the butterfly appears pushed off balance by the same gust of wind. The combination of close observation and movement gives the print a liveliness that extends well beyond a conventional floral composition.

Woven from 100% cotton and finished with colorful fringed edges, the blanket translates Hokusai's botanical composition into a textured textile while keeping the peonies, foliage, and butterfly at the center of the design. It is available in four sizes for use as a functional throw or decorative textile for spaces centered around Japanese art, botanical imagery, or historical prints.
