This botanical illustration of Papaver rhoeas, commonly known as the corn poppy or common poppy, comes from William Curtis's Flora Londinensis, the landmark botanical work published in London during the late 18th century. Created as a detailed record of plants growing wild in and around London, the collection paired botanical descriptions with finely rendered, hand-colored engraved plates.
The artwork presents the poppy with the careful observation characteristic of historical botanical illustration.
