Details

This 100% cotton poppy woven blanket features the Papaver rhoeas corn poppy from William Curtis's Flora Londinensis, framed by a deep burgundy border and finished with colorful fringed edges. The botanical plate shows the plant with the close observation characteristic of historical botanical illustration: scarlet flowers on slender stems, deeply divided green foliage, developing buds, a rounded seed capsule, and separate botanical details set against a warm cream ground.

First issued in 1777 and published through 1798, Flora Londinensis was Curtis's ambitious record of plants growing wild in and around London. Its hand-colored engraved plates were paired with detailed descriptions intended to identify and document the local flora. In his account of Papaver rhoeas, Curtis described the corn poppy as the most common of several related poppies found around London, particularly in cornfields. The result is botanical art with both scientific purpose and a remarkable amount of visual presence.

On the blanket, the rich reds and muted greens of the poppy study are set against a broad deep red border that gives the historical illustration a stronger textile frame. Woven cotton adds visible texture throughout the artwork, while the fringe carries the colors of the design into the finished edges.
