Vincent van Gogh painted Irises in 1889, shortly after arriving at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. Inspired by the flowers growing in the hospital garden, it was one of the first paintings he completed during his stay. The close-up composition and bold areas of color reflect Van Gogh’s admiration for Japanese woodblock prints, an important influence on his work. Interestingly, conservation research by the J. Paul Getty Museum revealed that many of the irises that appear blue today were originally violet. A light-sensitive red pigment in the paint gradually faded over time, changing the flowers' appearance. Today, Irises is part of the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and remains one of Van Gogh’s most recognizable floral works. Comfort looks a little different for everyone, but a cozy blanket is always a good place to start.
