Hyacinthoides non-scripta (Bluebell) is a botanical illustration from William Curtis's Flora Londinensis, the influential late-18th-century survey of plants growing wild in and around London. Originally identified in the work as Hyacinthus non-scriptus, the plant is now classified as Hyacinthoides non-scripta and is commonly known as the English bluebell.
The illustration presents the bluebell in the precise naturalistic style characteristic of historical botanical art, with its long, narrow leaves rising around a slender flowering stem and violet-blue, bell-shaped blossoms bending gracefully to one side. Below the main plant, exposed roots and bulb are shown alongside enlarged botanical details of the flower's reproductive structures, reflecting the scientific purpose behind the original plate.
Rendered against the warm, aged-paper tones of the historic print, the delicate blue and green coloring gives the artwork an understated woodland character while preserving the detail of an 18th-century botanical study. The plate was engraved by Francis Sansom, whose signature appears on the original illustration, and forms part of Curtis's celebrated Flora Londinensis.
