This vintage botanical illustration depicts Digitalis purpurea, commonly known as foxglove, from William Curtis's Flora Londinensis, the influential botanical work first published in parts beginning in 1775. Appearing as plate 48 in Volume 1, the illustration presents the plant with the careful observational detail characteristic of 18th-century botanical art.
A tall flowering stalk rises through the composition, lined with purple, bell-shaped blossoms whose pale interiors are delicately spotted.
