Cycles Perfecta by Alphonse Mucha (1902) is a celebrated Art Nouveau advertising poster created for the British bicycle company Cycles Perfecta. The composition centers on an elegant woman leaning over the handlebars of a bicycle, surrounded by an extraordinary sweep of flowing golden hair that curls and spirals throughout the design. Mucha uses the movement of her hair to give the otherwise poised figure a feeling of motion, freedom, and exhilaration associated with cycling.
Originally produced as a color lithograph and printed in Paris by F. Champenois, the poster showcases many of the qualities associated with Mucha's distinctive Art Nouveau style: graceful curves, decorative linework, a prominent female figure, and an ornamental composition that transforms commercial advertising into a work of decorative art.
