Details
Cliff Walk at Pourville was painted by French Impressionist Claude Monet in 1882 during a productive period spent along the Normandy coast. The painting looks out over the English Channel from a grassy clifftop near the fishing village of Pourville, with two figures strolling above the sea as sailboats appear along the distant horizon. Monet used brisk, textured brushstrokes throughout the grass, figures, water, and sky, capturing the movement of the coastal breeze and changing light that were central to his Impressionist approach. The two women are believed to be Marthe and Blanche Hoschedé, daughters of Alice Hoschedé, whom Monet would later marry. Cliff Walk at Pourville is now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Comfort looks a little different for everyone, but a cozy blanket is always a good place to start.
