Painted in 1882, Cliff Walk at Pourville depicts two figures standing on a grassy clifftop overlooking the English Channel, surrounded by shifting clouds, blue-green water, wild vegetation, and sailboats along the distant horizon. The two women are believed to be Marthe and Blanche Hoschedé, daughters of Alice Hoschedé, whom Monet would later marry.

Monet painted Cliff Walk at Pourville during a particularly productive period on the Normandy coast. That year, he created nearly one hundred paintings along the shoreline as he renewed his interest in the changing light and atmosphere of the English Channel. The scene was likely painted from Val Saint-Nicolas, between the villages of Pourville and Dieppe.

Loose, energetic brushstrokes give the original painting much of its movement. Grass bends across the foreground, clothing catches the coastal wind, and the sea and sky seem to change from one part of the canvas to the next. It is a distinctly Impressionist view of the French coast, concerned as much with light, weather, and atmosphere as with the landscape itself. The original Cliff Walk at Pourville is now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
