Children Playing on the Beach Woven Blanket – Mary Cassatt
Details
Children Playing on the Beach is a 100% woven cotton blanket featuring Mary Cassatt’s 1884 Impressionist painting of two young girls absorbed in play along a sandy shore. Soft blues, sandy neutrals, crisp whites, and the red ribbon of a straw hat give the scene its quiet coastal palette, while colorful fringed edges finish the woven design.
Cassatt was known for closely observed scenes of women, children, and everyday life, but coastal subjects were relatively unusual in her work. In Children Playing on the Beach, the girls sit side by side with their pails and shovel while the blue-green sea and small sailboats recede into the background. The painting was exhibited at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1886 and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The woven cotton construction gives the artwork a distinctly textured surface, with the colors of the design continuing into the fringe. Soft, breathable, and made for everyday use, it works equally well as a functional blanket or a textile accent for a room built around art.
A fitting choice for Mary Cassatt admirers, Impressionist art lovers, or anyone who prefers their home textiles with some actual art history behind them.
