Bamboo and Rising Sun by Japanese artist Utagawa Kunimaru (1829) is a delicate color woodblock print depicting slender bamboo rising before a brilliant red-orange sun. The large sun represents the first sunrise of the year, emerging behind a softly rendered golden cloud as dark bamboo stalks and pointed leaves create a striking natural silhouette across the composition.
Originally created as a surimono, a refined form of privately commissioned Japanese woodblock print, the artwork combines rich greens, warm gold and ochre tones, deep black accents, and the vivid red-orange of the rising sun. The original print also incorporates metallic pigments and a poem, bringing together imagery and verse within its compact composition. The contrast between the graceful bamboo, glowing sunrise, and restrained background gives the work a serene yet graphic quality characteristic of early 19th-century Japanese printmaking.
