This 100% cotton woven blanket features Bamboo and Rising Sun by Japanese artist Utagawa Kunimaru (1829), a delicate color woodblock print depicting bamboo leaves crossing a brilliant sun rising behind a low cloud.

The large red-orange sun represents the first sunrise of the year, emerging behind a softly rendered golden cloud as bamboo stalks and dark pointed leaves create a striking natural silhouette across the composition. Originally created as a surimono, a refined form of privately commissioned Japanese woodblock print, the artwork combines rich greens, warm gold and ochre tones, deep black accents, and the vivid red-orange of the rising sun. The original print also incorporated metallic pigments and a poem, bringing together imagery and verse within its compact composition. The contrast between the graceful bamboo, glowing sunrise, and restrained background gives the work a serene yet graphic quality characteristic of early 19th-century Japanese printmaking. 

The artwork is translated here into a woven textile with a visibly textured surface and multicolored fringed edges. Made from 100% woven cotton, the blanket keeps the graphic contrast of Kunimaru's composition while giving the image the character of woven fabric.
