Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Amaryllis Formosissima comes from his celebrated botanical series Les Liliacées, created in the early 19th century. The illustration depicts the dramatic flower historically known as Amaryllis formosissima—now classified as Sprekelia formosissima, a flowering plant native to Mexico and sometimes called the Jacobean or St. James lily.
Set against a simple, pale background, the plant is rendered with Redouté’s characteristic botanical precision. A vivid crimson-red flower rises above long, slender green leaves, its six narrow segments forming an unusual, asymmetrical shape that gives the bloom an almost orchid-like appearance. The exposed bulb and roots below complete the botanical study, while subtle variations of red, green, cream, and earthy brown preserve the refined character of the original illustration.
Originally produced as a color stipple engraving finished by hand, the artwork combines scientific observation with the graceful presentation for which Redouté’s botanical illustrations became renowned.
