Stechas, or French Lavender is Plate 241 from Volume I of Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal, published in 1737. The hand-colored botanical illustration depicts French lavender (Lavandula stoechas), identified in the original plate as Stoechas arabica or purpurea.
Blackwell presents the plant as a graceful botanical specimen, with slender branching stems, narrow green leaves, and distinctive purple flower spikes crowned by prominent violet bracts. Small studies of individual floral details surround the central specimen, while the softly aged background and restrained palette preserve the character of an 18th-century botanical print.
